Certificate in Maritime Economics
|
|
Ocean transportation is a key facilitator of global trade, growth and prosperity. The complicated workings of maritime economics are inextricably linked to the fortunes of the world economy. An understanding of the financial fundamentals of shipping is indispensable to an appreciation of its place at the centre of international commerce.
The Certificate in Maritime Economics introduces and explains the main components of this complex field. Students will gain a clear and comprehensive understanding of shipping markets, the operation of shipping companies, the different freight types, the economics of a ship throughout its lifecycle, the crucial part played by ports and terminals, and the essentials of shipping finance.
This course is for anyone needing a better understanding of maritime economics but who does not necessarily have a financial background. It is a perfect introduction to key concepts and terminologies, and will suit people recently starting in shipping, or hoping to move into a new role, especially in a financial field. It will also be helpful for people such as analysts, lawyers or consultants working alongside the industry who need a quick, complete understanding of maritime economics.
Because it is delivered by distance learning, the Certificate in Maritime Economics can be studied whatever your location or situation. There’s no need to travel or take time off work. Course materials can be downloaded and saved or printed to study at a time and location convenient to you. Online tests accompanying each module enable you to assess your understanding of the topics as you work through the course. The materials and quizzes are available from the start date until the 4th February 2011 which is the last day the website access will be available. Expert tutorial support is offered via an interactive online course forum, where you can also interact with your fellow students from varied backgrounds all over the world.

Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law
|
|
The establishment of this distance learning course in 2001 was in response to the growing demand for education in International Trade and Maritime Law within shipping, trade and related industries. English law is recognised internationally as a dominant legal system providing the basis for maritime and trade contracts, with London as the single most important forum for settling disputes, both through court litigation and via arbitration.
The course provides a programme of postgraduate study which will develop your academic knowledge and awareness of International Trade and Maritime Law and increase your understanding of how commercial trade ventures may give rise to legal issues. The aim is that the law will be studied in relation to how it is applied in practice, and the course brings together the intellectual rigour of academia with the experience of leading legal practitioners. The course will give you a high level of understanding and knowledge of the most critical aspects of International Trade and Maritime Law.
Successful completion of the course will entitle you to carry your postgraduate diploma credits onto a LLM course. In addition to the University LLM course, subject to validation, new to 2010 is the option to further your studies through to a LLM degree by distance learning with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. This top up is exclusively for students that have completed the Postgraduate Diploma.
Who is the course for? This course is of great relevance to those who wish to acquire expertise in International Trade and Maritime Law. The programme has been specifically designed for students from a wide variety of commercial shipping backgrounds, both legal and non-legal. For example: lawyers; those engaged in the shipping and trading industries; trading brokers; shipping/chartering organisations; salvage organisations; P&I Clubs; insurance; and banking.
What will I get out of the course? By successfully completing this course you will: • Understand the principles of International Trade and Maritime Law and the overall commercial context in which those principles operate • Be able to analyse practical problems raising legal issues • Be able to apply the relevant law to problems that arise in practice • Be better equipped to negotiate a dispute settlement • Have developed the capacity for independent study • Have gained an internationally recognised qualification from a UK university
